The much photographed cafe royal was built some time between 1925 and 1937 we know this because a young family moved into the property in 1937 full of hope and aspirations. The Cafe was owned previously by a band leader Mr. Hedley Moffatt and there is a suggestion that the cafe had had a history of unusual owners. The young family who moved in on the Easter of 1937 were Mr. & Mrs. Taylor. Fred and Hilda and their children Betty and Anne. as the children played in their new play ground Hilda came to terms with no Electricity and no running Water not the best start to what became a delightful and popular cafe. As the family came to terms with their new venture they had to decide what to call it may be the Bluebird Cafe and tuck shop in the end they left it as the Cafe Royal. When they moved in there was no electricity or running water but there was a fire stove for cooking and the water was carried for a near pump. We know about the life and times of the Taylor family from a delightful book that Anne wrote and called “A Village to Grow In.
